Central
City History
Central City, before being settled, was an area where people
would assemble for hunting parties and family gatherings along the banks of the
Ohio River. Around 1890, a group of investors organized a land company and
bought up several farms just west of Huntington, West Virginia. This area and
the resulting town were called Central City. Reports indicated it was given this
name because it was centrally located between the towns of Catlettsburg,
Kentucky and Guyandotte, West Virginia. Almost immediately, Central City became
a flourishing manufacturing town from what was originally farmland, to a
population of nearly 2,500 in just one year.
Today, Old Central City is known as the
"Antique Capital" of the Tri-State (Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia). You can
enjoy shopping, eating, and experience our rich history at the nearby museums.
Also, you can enjoy the fresh produce of the Tailgate Farmer's
Market, Preston Farms and Greenhouse at the Central City Market.
